How to Get from Boquete to Bocas del Toro: Bus, Shuttle and Water Taxi
Boquete to Bocas del Toro is one of the great short journeys in Central America: you leave the coffee highlands after breakfast, cross the continental divide through cloud forest, and finish the day on the Caribbean. Because Bocas town sits on an island, Isla Colón, every option ends with a water taxi from Almirante. Here is how the ways to get there compare.
The short answer
- Bus and water taxi: two buses, a taxi and a boat — around $16 and six hours or more.
- Shared shuttle: about four hours by road to Almirante, then a 20 to 30 minute crossing; $43 per person with us.
Option 1: public bus and water taxi
- Boquete to David. Frequent local buses from central Boquete, about $2 and roughly an hour.
- David to Almirante. Look for buses signed Almirante or Changuinola — about $8 and three and a half to four and a half hours over the mountains.
- Almirante bus terminal to the dock. A short taxi ride, around $1.
- Water taxi to Bocas town. About $6 and 20 to 30 minutes across the bay.
About $16 all in. None of it can be booked ahead — you buy each ticket on the day — and on a busy day the waits between connections stretch the trip well past six hours.
Option 2: the shared shuttle
We collect you in Boquete in the morning and take the mountain road straight over the divide, through the Fortuna Forest Reserve, to the Almirante water-taxi dock — timed to meet the boat into Bocas town. No David terminal, no changes, no carrying bags between taxis. See our Boquete to Bocas del Toro shuttle: $43 per person, with the departure time confirmed by WhatsApp the day before.
The road itself
The stretch over the Fortuna reserve is one of the most beautiful drives in Panama — cloud forest on both sides, waterfalls after rain, and the temperature dropping before you descend the Caribbean slope. It is also winding: if you get carsick, take something before you leave and sit near the front.
Practical tips
- Leave in the morning. The mountain section is easier and far more scenic in daylight, and you reach the islands with the afternoon free.
- Swimwear at the top of your bag. You will want it the moment you arrive.
- Carry small bills for the water taxis between the islands once you are there.
- Think about the season. Bocas has its own microclimate — September and October are often bright there while the Pacific side is wet.
