How to Get from Santa Catalina to Boquete: Bus vs Shuttle
After a few days of Coiba boats and surf, most travellers head for the mountains. Santa Catalina and Boquete are only about 340 km apart, but there is no direct public bus between them — and the way you choose to make the trip decides whether you lose an afternoon or a whole day. Here is how the options really compare.
The short answer
- Public bus: four buses, around $18, and close to 10 hours once you count the waiting.
- Shared shuttle: one van, about 5 hours, $42 per person with us.
- Driving yourself: roughly 4.5 to 5 hours if you already have a car.
Option 1: the public bus
The budget route is four separate buses, with a change of terminal at each step:
- Santa Catalina to Soná. A small regional bus from the main road, about $5. There are only a few departures a day, so ask in town the evening before.
- Soná to Santiago. A short regional bus, about $2.
- Santiago to David. A long-distance bus west along the Pan-American Highway, about $9 and around three hours.
- David to Boquete. The local bus up into the mountains, about $2 and under an hour.
That is roughly $18 in fares. The catch is time: travellers who make the trip in one go report close to ten hours door to door, and if the first bus out of Santa Catalina runs late, every connection after it moves with it. Bring cash — ATMs in Santa Catalina are unreliable.
Option 2: the shared shuttle
One vehicle the whole way. We collect you in Santa Catalina, the van joins the Pan-American near Soná, stops for a break, and climbs from David into the highlands — about five hours, with no terminals and no hauling bags between buses. Our Santa Catalina to Boquete shuttle is $42 per person, with the departure time coordinated per group and confirmed by WhatsApp the day before.
What you are really buying is half a day of your holiday back. For a couple, the shuttle costs about $48 more than the bus between the two of you — and saves around five hours each.
Option 3: driving
If you already have a rental car, the drive is straightforward: inland to Soná, on to Santiago, west on the Pan-American to David, then north up the mountain road to Boquete. Allow 4.5 to 5 hours with a stop.
Which one should you choose?
- Solo backpacker with spare days: the bus is cheap and part of the adventure.
- Couples, families and groups: the shuttle — especially after an early Coiba day, when nobody wants four bus changes.
- Five or more travelling together: ask us about a private van at your own departure time.
Practical tips
- Pack a sweater. Boquete sits around 1,200 m, and after the coast the evenings feel genuinely cold.
- Book a day or two ahead in dry season (December to April), when this leg fills up.
- Leave in the morning so you reach Boquete with daylight to find your hotel.
Going on from Boquete
Most travellers continue over the mountains to the Caribbean — see our guide to getting from Boquete to Bocas del Toro. Heading back to the coast later? The Boquete to Santa Catalina shuttle runs the same road in reverse.
