How Much Does a Trip to Panama Cost? A 2026 Budget Guide

Panama runs on the US dollar, which makes budgeting easy — no conversion maths, no exchange bureaus. Here is what things actually cost in 2026, from the team that moves travellers around the country every week. Prices are typical ranges; the fixed fees are the official ones.

Daily budgets, honestly

Sleeping

Dorm beds run about $15–25 in the tourist towns; simple private doubles $35–60; comfortable midrange hotels $70–120. Panama City and Bocas sit at the top of those ranges; Santiago, David and the Azuero at the bottom. Carnival week and Christmas–New Year push everything up — book those ahead.

Eating

The menu del día at a local fonda — soup, a main, rice, drink — costs about $4–6 and is how drivers eat on the road. Tourist-town restaurant mains run $10–18; a fresh juice $2–3; local beer $2–4. Self-catering from supermarkets is easy in every base town.

Getting around (real prices)

These are our actual shared-shuttle fares, per person: Panama City → Santa Catalina $60; Santa Catalina → Boquete $35; Boquete → Bocas del Toro $30 plus the short Almirante water taxi; Boquete → David $15. Inside Panama City the metro costs well under a dollar and short taxi hops a few dollars. Groups of five or more usually pay less per person in a private van — ask us.

Where to save and where not to

Save on rooms (the $25 hostel and the $80 hotel are on the same beach) and eat at fondas. Do not save by skipping Coiba to “just snorkel from shore” — the park is the best thing in the region and shore snorkelling is not comparable. And skip the rental car entirely: for a normal route the shuttle legs above cost less than the car, fuel and parking — check your own numbers in the route finder.

Getting around Panama

We run shared and private shuttles linking Panama City, Santa Catalina, Boquete, Bocas del Toro, David and more — plus Coiba National Park day tours from Santa Catalina.
