The Perfect 10-Day Panama Itinerary: City, Coiba and Both Coasts
Most first-time visitors make the same mistake: they treat Panama as a stopover and only see the canal. Ten days is enough to do it properly — capital city, cloud-forest mountains, a UNESCO marine park and Caribbean islands — without ever renting a car, because shuttles connect every leg of this route.
Days 1–2: Panama City
Land at Tocumen, check into Casco Viejo or the banking district. Day one: the old town’s plazas, rooftop bars and the fish market. Day two: Miraflores Locks in the morning to watch ships transit the canal, then the Amador Causeway at sunset. Two nights is the right amount — the city is a great start, not the main event.
Days 3–5: Santa Catalina & Coiba National Park
A morning shuttle crosses the country in about 7 hours to Santa Catalina, a fishing village with a famous surf break and no crowds. Day four is the highlight of the whole trip: a full-day boat tour into Coiba National Park — snorkeling with white-tip sharks, turtles and huge fish schools in a UNESCO World Heritage site. Day five: surf lesson, fishing trip, or a second Coiba day if the first one hooked you (it usually does).
Days 6–8: Boquete
The shuttle to Boquete takes around 5 hours, climbing into coffee country at 1,200 m where the air suddenly turns cool. Hike the Lost Waterfalls or Pipeline Trail, tour a coffee farm (Geisha coffee was made famous here), soak in hot springs. Ambitious hikers summit Volcán Barú for sunrise — on a clear day you see both oceans at once.
Days 9–10: Bocas del Toro
Cross the continental divide to the Caribbean — about 4 hours by shuttle plus a short water taxi. Bocas is starfish beaches, over-water restaurants, snorkeling at Cayo Coral and bicycle rides to Playa Bluff. Fly back to Panama City from Bocas airport, or shuttle back if your flight leaves the next day.
