Things to Do in Azuero: Pedasí, Playa Venao and Panama’s Festival Country

The Azuero Peninsula is where Panama keeps its own traditions: ox carts, hand-made polleras, village festivals that shut down whole towns, and a dry coastline of surf beaches that stays warm and sunny while the rest of the country rains. Two provinces share it — Herrera in the north, Los Santos in the south — and they feel different from each other.

Pedasí: the base for everything

Pedasí is a small grid of colourful houses about 40 minutes from the tip of the peninsula. It is the practical base: bakeries, a couple of good restaurants, ATMs, and boats to Isla Iguana. It stays low-rise and low-key, which is precisely its appeal.

Isla Iguana: snorkelling and frigatebirds

A 30-minute boat ride from Playa El Arenal gets you to a wildlife refuge with the largest hard-coral reef on Panama’s Pacific side and a nesting colony of thousands of magnificent frigatebirds. From July to October humpback whales pass offshore. Go early — afternoon wind chops the crossing.

Playa Venao: surf for every level

Venao is a horseshoe bay with a sand bottom, which is why it has become the peninsula’s surf hub: the same beach works for a first lesson and for a competition. It has the most developed accommodation and nightlife on the coast, but “developed” here still means a handful of hostels and beach bars.

Beaches worth the detour

• Playa Destiladeros — rock pools and cliffs, good at low tide.
• Playa Cambutal — further west, heavier waves, almost nobody there.
• Playa El Toro — 10 minutes from Pedasí, calm enough for swimming.

Culture: time your trip to a festival

This is the strongest folkloric region in the country. Las Tablas hosts the most famous Carnival in Panama (February or March) and the Festival de la Pollera in July. Guararé holds the National Folklore Festival in September. Book accommodation months ahead for Carnival — the town triples in size.

Chitré and the craft towns

Chitré in Herrera is the commercial centre and a good stop for workshops: La Arena for pottery, Ocú for hand-woven hats and shirts, Parita for colonial streets, and Pesé for the sugar-cane distillery.

Best season

Azuero has the driest climate in Panama. December to April is reliably sunny and windy — ideal for beaches, harder for small boats. May to November brings greener landscapes, calmer water for Isla Iguana, and whale season.
